1. Address Book version 3.7 is distributed on bulletin boards and commercial services, such as Compuserve, as a Stuffit archive (notice the suffix ".sit"). If you obtain Address Book from a service, you will need a utility such as Stuffit Expander邃｢ to unstuff it. Just drag the ADDRBK.SIT icon onto the Stuffit Expander邃｢ icon, and it will be unstuffed for you (Compuserve's MacCIM, and America Online software all include Stuffit Expander邃｢, and do the job automatically).
2. If you obtained Address Book from an internet source, it will have a BinHex (.hqx) suffix. Most Mac internet software automatically de-BinHexes files; so does Stuffit Expander邃｢.
3. If you obtain Address Book on disk, you will see this document and a self-extracting archive named Address Book 3.7 Installer; just insert the Address Book disk into your disk drive and double-click on the Address Book 3.7 Installer icon, and select a place to save the Address Book 3.7 folder on your hard drive. Once the archive has been extracted, double click on the new Address Book folder to open it.

3. Double-click on the Address Book 3.7.0 icon to start the application. A dialog box will open; it will ask you if you wish to find an existing preferences file, or create a new one. Click "No" to create a new "AdBk prefs" file in this folder.
4. A second dialog box will then appear, asking you to either find an existing Address List you wish to use, or create a new one. If you click "Yes" to search for a list, another dialog box will open; find and select the Sample list and open it. If you click "No" Address Book will create a new list, allow you to select a folder to save it to, and open an edit window to allow you to begin entering records.
The Address Book application is the full-featured version of the program, which most people will use all the time. The Desk Accessory is included for those who wish to use Address Book on a Macintosh with limited memory and hard drive space, such as a 1 meg Mac Plus, or a 4 meg LC running System 7. Even if you prefer to use the Address Book Desk Accessory, you still need the Address Book application program for printing.
The DA and application normally use the same list files; you can use the DA and application to have two lists open at the same time.
Users of Previous Versions:
Please remove the old DA and /or application. Otherwise, if you double-click on a list to open it, or open Address Book from the Apple Menu, you may still end up using the old version of the application or DA.
Replace the AdBk Help file: there have been many changes. Keep your existing AdBk prefs file.
The Desk Accessory
System 6 users must install the DA with the Font-DA mover or Suitcase邃｢. System 7 users should double-click on the Desk Accessory suitcase to open it, then drag the DA into your Address Book folder, or the Apple Menu Items folder. Use the DA for entering and editing records, finding and browsing through records, and dialing phone numbers. You can also use it in conjunction with the Application if you wish to have two Address Lists open at the same time. Launch the Address Book application to print and export records.
For Address Book version 1 and 2 users
Address Book version 3 will open your version 1 or version 2 list file and convert it to the new format. Version 3 has a new record format and the fields hold more characters than earlier versions did: the record size has increased from 440 bytes to 614 bytes. Therefore, because the list is memory resident, Address Book now requires more memory to run. In addition, the application is larger, requiring even more memory. Address Book's Preferred memory size is now 800k; if you have a 1 meg Mac, you may want to add memory, especially if you use Multifinder.
CAUTION: once you have opened and saved the list with version 3, don't try to open it again with version 1 or 2; the data format has changed, and your list could be corrupted.
The DA no longer requires the Addr_list file to be in the system folder, nor has it to be named "Addr_list".
Powerbook users
To use Address Book's modem dialing feature, open the Powerbook Setup Control Panel and select "Compatible" dialing.
